Yoda

YODA: a character analysis

by Emilio Lopez

In the prequels, Yoda is presented to us as a grand leader who leads the Jedi Order in peace and can always
sense darkness, but underneath, he is slowly revealed to be blinded by his arrogance and pays for this with
the fall of the Jedi order. Because of this, Yoda casts himself into exile and waits for the chosen one who
will defeat the Sith and bring balance to the Force. When Luke comes to him on Dagobah, Yoda agrees to train him
for this purpose.

Character Analysis

Goals, ambition, dreams        To maintain/restore peace in the galaxy and destroy the Sith.
Secrets                                  That Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father
Fears/Phobias                        The Sith overtaking the galaxy, and when they do, is eventual fear is that Darth Vader
and the Emperor will seduce Luke in to the Dark Side.
Sense of humor                     He is funny in an elderly sort of way when he can be.
Adrenaline moments             When ever he has a duel like with the Emperor or Count Dooku, otherwise
he is always calm and clear-headed.
Physical description              Yoda is short, very wrinkly and green. He has ragged robes and he uses his looks to make his
                                              opponent underestimate him.
Physical disabilities, if any    Yoda has no physical disabilities except for his old age. But he makes up with this in his
                                               ability with the Force.
Action                                     Yoda can fight with a lightsaber very well, move objects with the Force, and is
                                                incredibly agile in a duel.

Character Poses  Three poses that represent Yoda

In this pic, Yoda is in his resting state of calm. Yoda doesn't brew in anger or think emotional thoughts.
Instead, he spends most of his days meditating and putting his mind at rest.

In this pic, Yoda is using the Force to lift a ship out of a swamp bog. Even though the X-Wing is extremely heavy,
he lets the Force flow through him and can clear his mind enough to accomplish feats like this.

While Yoda is a skilled practitioner and always uses the Force in defense, and never in attack,
he can beat almost anyone
in a duel, and is one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy.

Yoda's Gestures:

In this gesture, Yoda bows his head in disappointment. Because Luke is a stubborn and slow
learner, Yoda does this a lot throughout the original trilogy. But, being a wise and patient mentor,
he continues teaching him.

That time Yoda completely violated R2 - GIF on Imgur
In this gesture, Yoda shows his comedic side and hits R2 with his walking stick.
He does this to see if will Luke underestimate him and test his ability to sense the trick.

How did Yoda counter Count Dooku's Force lightning? - Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange

In this last gesture, Yoda absorbs Count Dooku's force lightning attack. This is an example of

Yoda's quote: A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defensenever for attack.”

While Yoda knows that he can attack and beat Dooku in a fight, he doesn't make the first move

and allows him to attack first, blocking and redirecting the lightning.

Power Center:

Due to his old age, Yoda relies on a crutch when he is at rest or doing ordinary tasks. His shoulders
slump forward and he limps.

But when he is drawing from the force to battle, he takes a powerful and confident stance.
His shoulders roll back and his chest puffs, and he flips around and is extremely fast.

Yoda will also pretend to be a feeble and weak old man in front of his enemies so they will
underestimate his strength. Much like Gandalf when he pretended his staff was just an
old man's walking stick.

Yoda character sequence analysis:
Lifting the X-Wing

Execution

When Yoda tells Luke to lift the X-Wing out of the swamp, Luke claims it's impossible.

But after Yoda tells him that nothing is impossible and only seems difficult in his mind, Luke

tries to lift it and fails. To show him his failure in doubt, Yoda lifts the X-Wing.

What is the message or emotion you are communicating in the scene?
What are your choices?

In this scene, Yoda wants to show Luke that nothing is impossible, and that his stubbornness

and lack of imagination prevent him form doing great things. To show him this, he does it himself

and proves that even a little, green old man can lift something 20,000 times heavier if you believe.

Subtext

The implicit meaning of a character or scene

Body acting and speech could contrast each other

Yoda says: "No, only different in your mind"

(Your mind is too stubborn to accept that a rock and a ship are no different in how

they relate to the force)

When Luke says, "I don't believe it", Yoda says, "That is why you fail".

(Because you doubt and think things are too difficult to accomplish, you prevent yourself

from accomplishing anything)

Specificity

Yoda's goal in training Luke is to defeat the Sith and bring back peace in the galaxy.

In order to prepare Luke, Yoda needs to break down the walls that Luke has built up in himself,

but Luke doubts himself more than anything. Creating an example will help Luke

see that anything is possible.

Caricature

Yoda says, "No, no different, only different in your mind" when Luke claims that lifting a

space ship and a rock is totally different. While it is obvious that a rock and a space ship

are different objects, the point is that how they relate to the force is no different, and self doubt

in which one is easier to lift is what makes them different.

Character Analysis (Kirby Star Allies; Hyness)

 Character Analysis

Name: Hyness

Gender:
Male

Age:
Unclear

Ethnicity:
An unknown clan that was wiped from history, and, according to a Nintendo Dream interview, is nearing the brink of extinction.

Family:
The Three Mage-Sisters, a group of sisters/sisterhood (The wording is deliberately ambiguous) were all adopted and raised by Hyness, and act as elite enforces of the cult out of love and loyalty to his cause, despite his physically abusive behavior.

Cultural background:
Hyness is either a descendant or survivor of a long-gone religious clan that was formerly aligned with a different group

Intelligence (IQ):
While overshadowed by his current insanity, his charisma and emotional and strong intellect was what made him the elective leader of his religious clan.

Education: N/A

Occupation:
The figurehead of the villainous cult that acts as the main antagonist group of Kirby Star Allies.

Religion/Philosophy:
The minister/head priest of an unnamed apocalyptic cult that worships an ancient, planet-destroying traveling entity known as "Void."

Sexual orientation:
N/A

Goals, ambition, dreams:
To resurrect Void/Void Termina, the god of his religion, and let him conquer the world out of vengeance.

Secrets:
He was formerly a kind leader, whose compassion and intelligence had made him a beloved, de-facto leader of the religious sect he heads. However, the tribulations and suffering he and his clan had suffered had led to him eventually 'forsaking his heart' and becoming trapped in a mental "spiral of loneliness and despair." All this culminated into his corruption into the abusive, insane cult leader that Kirby encounters in the climax of Kirby Star Allies's initial story mode.

Fears/Phobias:
N/A

Sense of humor:
While it is mostly a byproduct of his darkness/grief-induced insanity, he frequently dances and makes bizarre movements during the heroes' fight against Hyness, and in his rant about his motivations, he outright screams "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DARK LORD! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

Adrenaline moments:
His entire existence, from his entire battle, before and after, to the implements of both his religion and backstory, is arguably an entire 'adrenaline marathon'. The deity of the 'Jamba religion' alone, Void, has various attacks and forms that a multitude of past antagonists and monstrosities from past Kirby titles, and is implied to be both the origin of such entities but may even be related to Kirby himself.

Physical description:
Hyness is clad in religious attire; wearing a white cloak with gold, runic embroidery, as well as the logo of the cult he leads. He has a blue head with yellow rings all over his bulging eyes and ears, as well as a distinct nose.

Physical disabilities, if any:
His head could turn at inhumane angles, adding to his mad gesticulation.

Intention: Hyness's actions reflect a vengeful, insanity-driven desire to enact revenge against the world for dismissing him and his people.

Subtext: The entirety of Hyness's religion's context and what is told from both background info, Hyness's words, and the deity behind the religion, both reflects continuity from across the Kirby franchise, and contributes to the subtext about the 'Ancients' that have been alluded to since games such as Kirby: Super Star Ultra, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, etc.

Execution: From his wild spasms, his bizarre dances, and abusive behavior towards his subordinates, he unambiguously expresses himself as an insane, malevolent leader.

Caricature: With his holy attire, his devotion to his "Dark Lord/God", and his descent to madness; he's a ghastly caricature of devout religious leaders; especially their hypocrisies and cruelties.

Center of Power: It rests upon his upper body, his shoulders and/or hip area. While Kirby characters have relatively simple anatomy to begin with, and his body is obscured; he compensates by his constant shuddering and dancing, which involves flailing around his body and arms. He's also at least strong enough to grab and punch around his subordinates, especially whilst they've been unwillingly petrified into statues.

Three Poses:

This pointing gesture, which is what was used as the establishing shot of his splash art before Kirby fights him; is relatively modest compared to his expressiveness before and after his mask is removed. This simple pose reflects the quiet eerieness his initial introduction showcases, as well as arguably represents him being the dictating officiant of his religion.

Pictured above is his most frequent pose, which was most prominently shown when he was moderating the Jamba Heart, the artifact that contains the deity he worships.. The way he constantly raises his arms may either be how he tends to gesticulates as per his religion and/or is an indicator of his intensely expressive madness.

Hyness dances around just like this during the second phase of his battle. This exemplifies his absolute madness once the mask of calmness has been forcibly excised from him, and shows just how his despair-induced madness has affected him as a person.

Gestures:

Along with showing his wild gestures, this section also shows his dismissive, abusive side, as here are scenes where he's explicitly shown abusing the Mage-Sisters, who are his direct subordinates and are the primary commanding enforcers of the cult.

Comedy Analysis

    #Comedy Analysis

    Comedy Analysis Sync sketch

Please relate it to the following topics

    1.  Status,
Bruce has built up the status of himself as being a weak nerd, while the status of the
Hulk is a badass monster hero. He teases the awesomeness of the Hulk to Valkyrie before
he jumps out of the plane as to build up the reveal.
    2.  Contrast
The contrast of Bruce Banner and the giant wolf already makes for a humorous scene,
but the contrast of the anticipated Hulk reveal with the pathetic fall on to the bridge
is what makes for the joke.

    3.  Expectation

We expect Bruce to jump out of the plane and transform into the Hulk midair and beat up the giant wolf.
This is a parallel to 2012's Avengers, where Bruce 'reveals' the Hulk to the team by transforming mid-punch and
crushing the giant alien in front of them. Instead, our expectations are subverted by a slapstick gag when he
plops on to the bridge like a pebble.

    4.  Timing.
The suspense of the scene is built when the conflict of the wolf looms, and Bruce Banner
is faced with the choice of turning into the Hulk. The music swells as the audience thinks
they know where the scene is going. The long shot of the wolf running at the innocent
citizens makes for a anticipating build up and makes the punchline that much funnier.

    1.  Expectation-we expect him to land as the hulk fully enraged
    2.  Set up-when Bruce announces that he's gonna show her who he is
    3.  Status-in a heroic moment leaps in the defense of the Asgardians.

    Movie of discussion: Wreck-It Ralph

    Source material (Video clip)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8I1BRCcD6g

In this shot, the main protagonist Ralph is approached by King Candy, a pompous regent within the Sugar Rush game. Due to bad experiences with King Candy himself, Ralph immediately becomes irate; charging after the diminutive character with the intent of 'beating the belly out of' him. In an attempt to pacify Ralph, King Candy promptly equips himself with oversized glasses out of hammerspace and utters the stock phrase "You won't hit a guy with glasses, would you?" In response, Ralph nonchalantly takes said glasses and strikes him with the glasses. This is immediately called out by the King Candy, who remarks "You hit a guy with glasses..." which makes him giggle and mutter "Well played." and thus distracting him enough to be grappled by Ralph himself.

This scene plays out the "You won't hit a guy with glasses, would you?" scenario in which a character who doesn't typically don glasses does so regardless in a bid to prevent a potential assailant from attacking them, only for the assailant to strike them regardless. What makes this notable, however, is that Ralph attacks Candy by lightly bludgeoning him with the spectacles, therefore hitting him 'with glasses', hence what King Candy immediately notes out of the punchline and thus gets him amused.

Status immediately plays out by the arrival of King Candy himself, and Ralph's mood souring into pure rage upon the former's presence. Within the context of the film, this is an immediate whiplash, as prior to this, Ralph was bonding with a bratty, yet sympathetic character named Vanellope von Schweetz. The expectation is filled just as immediate as the typical punchline, with Ralph hitting Candy; but with the additional, subversive usage of 'the glasses' itself, which is distinct enough for Candy himself to acknowledge. It's a quick gag in an otherwise tense scene, as this is promptly followed by a scene in which King Candy manipulates Ralph into straining said friendship with Vanellope, and being an otherwise goofy moment helps add a sense of levity within a transition between a heartwarming scene to a tense and somber one.
